Lisa
McPike Smith is a ceramic artist that works and lives in San Marcos,
Texas. She comes from a long line of talented artists and craftsmen
who encouraged her to follow her passion for art. She earned her BFA
in Studio Art in 1992 from Southwest Texas State University (now
Texas State University) with a concentration in ceramics. She prides
herself in being a fifth generation Texan, although she moved to
Colorado after college to pursue a career in painting tiles for
folks in the Roaring Fork Valley. She returned to Texas after 10
years to get back in touch with her roots and to be further inspired
by the rich
culture of central Texas.
With a fondness for tiles,
she decided to start making her own using her designs inspired by
the natural world.
Lisa’s work is made using
traditional slab construction along with block-printing processes.
She hand-carves a variety of block-prints that give her work a
unique bas-relief surface. Each piece is low-fired and glazed using
traditional techniques. All pieces are food-safe, but not meant for
the microwave or dishwasher.
Lisa shows her work in only
a handful of galleries, gift shops and seasonal art shows throughout
the southwest. She recently had a solo show at the San Marcos
Chamber of Commerce and had a piece hanging in the Austin Bergstrom
International Airport in the summer of 2010.
Lisa’s love of the creative
process keeps her inspired to create new works of art to share with
others.
